What Are Maker and Taker Fees?

Crypto exchanges charge two types of trading fees depending on how your order interacts with the order book. Understanding the difference directly affects your trading costs, especially at high volume.

Maker Fee

Charged when you place a limit orderthat does not execute immediately — it sits in the order book and "makes" liquidity. Maker fees are almost always lower than taker fees, and some exchanges offer negative maker fees (rebates) to incentivise liquidity providers.

Taker Fee

Charged when you place a market orderthat executes immediately against existing orders — it "takes" liquidity from the book. Taker fees are higher because the exchange rewards patience. Most retail traders pay taker fees by default.

Fee = Trade Amount × Fee Rate  |  e.g. $10,000 × 0.1% = $10.00

How to Reduce Your Crypto Trading Fees

Use Limit Orders

Placing limit orders qualifies you for the lower maker fee instead of the taker fee. On most exchanges this alone cuts your fee by 20–50%. Set your price and let the market come to you.

Hold Exchange Tokens

Many exchanges offer fee discounts for holding their native token — e.g. BNB on Binance, OKB on OKX. Discounts of 20–25% are common, and some offer additional rebates at higher holdings.

Reach VIP Tiers

Most exchanges offer reduced fees at higher 30-day trading volume tiers. Active traders moving $1M+ per month often qualify for significantly lower rates than the published standard fees.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between maker and taker fees?

Maker fees apply when you place a limit order that is not immediately filled — your order sits in the order book and adds liquidity. Taker fees apply when you place a market order that executes immediately, removing liquidity from the book. Maker fees are always lower, and some exchanges pay a rebate to makers.

Which crypto exchange has the lowest fees?

MEXC currently offers 0% maker and taker fees on spot trading for many pairs, making it the lowest cost option for standard trades. OKX and Crypto.com also offer competitive rates starting at 0.04%–0.08% maker fees. Always check current rates as exchanges update fee structures regularly.

How are crypto exchange fees calculated?

Fees are calculated as a percentage of the total trade value. For example, buying $10,000 of Bitcoin on Binance at a 0.1% taker fee costs $10 in fees. This calculator automatically applies the correct maker and taker rate for your selected exchange and converts the result to your chosen denomination currency.

Do fees apply to both buying and selling crypto?

Yes — fees are charged on both sides of a trade. When you buy crypto with a market order, you pay the taker fee. When you later sell with a market order, you pay the taker fee again. Round-trip trading costs are therefore 2× the taker fee. Using limit orders on both sides reduces total round-trip cost significantly.
